Work in progress

This is the first anamatic that I tried to do, but was not happy with the way it turned out so I decided to do another one using different drawings.

Week 27/11/2009- 04/12/2009

27/11/2009-04/12/2009
During this week I created a table with the tasks that needed to be completed and by when. This means that I organised the tasks which needs to be done and by when they need to be completed. When doing this I allocated myself the task of emailing the actors setting dates for when they would be required to film scenes. In order to do this a meeting was set up with them and a list was taken of their email addresses and days available. With this data I compiled I was then able to set the official dates and emailed it to them. I think that this went well because emails are quick and simple ways to send messages to people also I think that many people use emails to talk to friends or long distance families. This means that the chances of the person getting the message through their email are higher.

The other task I did was analysed a teaser for the film "Grace", looking at the key questions, shot list and information that I thought was relevant based on the teaser. Before I analysed this teaser I researched different movies and created a mood-board. I wanted to create one which was showing the variety of films I looked at and one where I was focusing on a specific film. In the end I created an animoto using www.animoto.com and I also used “windows media maker” to edit sound and merge the two video clips of “Them” and “Devil Times Five” and put the song “Beauty and the Best”. The reason why I did this is because I wanted to enhance my creative knowledge of the film.

Next week I am finalising the locations of where I think the filming should take place, I am not directly filming however I will be present when the filming is happening in order to talk and guide the actors on what they may need to do if the filmier is not able to do this. By being present I am also able to change location if I do not think that it was a good place to film or change the location if there are any inconveniences such as the rooms being used.
I will also be logging the scenes so that when it comes to editing I will know t he shots which I want to use.

Research into thriller genre

Suspense, there is always a protagonist and an antagonist whose forces collide. The action in this genre tends to be at a fast pace and many scenes of actions occur. By doing this a thriller is keeping the attention of the audience. This type of genre will appeal to a target audience that are interested in escaping into another world .

A psychological thriller is similar to a thriller in terms of what it does and the types of scene that occur, however a character or some fo the characters suffer from psychological difference that influence their judgement and who they are. Examples of this include:
Dualism- this is when a character has a split personality, their minds are not of one person and as a result characters that have a dual nature find it difficult to tell reality from fiction.
Ontology- this is when a person tries to determine what actually exists, similarly to dualism characters is unable to tell what is physical and what is a fabrication of their minds.

The themes which are usually involved in a psychological thriller are:
• Mind
• Perception
• Identity
• Death
• Existence

For my teaser I think that identity, mind and death are the themes that will occur in the movie, focusing on a character that has a dual nature. The dual nature means they are unaware of the deaths which are occurring and believe the “thing” that is haunting the others and killing them are also after this character. As this relates to a character not being able to tell what is physical and an illusion.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2010- ANALYSIS and GRACE TEASER ANALYSIS

These films are influential for the teaser trailer we are thinking about creating because the genre is similar, I choose to do one which involved children (moon-board) and grace because the original idea was to have a child present. I thought that it would be a good idea if the child was the person with a dual nature and committing the crimes however the child is a witness to what is happening. The other teaser I did, I choose because of the way it is presented. The diegetic and non diegetic sound in my opinion go well with what is happening. The other reason why this appealed to me was because of the contrast from the other teaser trailer I analysed.

SYNOPSIS

Synopsis

A sixteen year old Wadō-ryū Karate champion has to past her final exam to be named the best; practicing in a sports hall two other fighters enter the scene. One is on the path of destroying all existence through delusional ideas to someone with common sense and the other a passive companion with a secret agenda. What the agenda is we never find out. What side this person is on is not clear. All we know is that all three of the people in the room are linked somehow. For the world to be saved some of the greatest martial artists have to come together and win the ultimate prize. Nobody is able to do this on their own, sacrifices are necessary.

The film is set in the present day. The sixteen year old Karate champion is from the present world however the two fighters are not. There are hints that they are not from this time period however where they have come from is never revealed. The main action takes place in the sports hall the girl is in at the beginning of the scene however the streets of London will be shown to establish the location/country the movie is talking place in.

The main genre for this movie will be action due to the content and story behind the movie. There will be some cut scenes near the end but I want to establish the character and some of the scenes first. There will be fight scenes which is common in action movies however technology will not be used as it isn’t important. The movie itself would take the POV of the sixteen year old girl who is the main character and follow her though the events which occur.

Themes which will be explored:
• Power
• Control
• Delusion
• Fighting
• Comradeship

Moonboard

The vide shown above contains a soundrack from the game Death by Degrees, I used this soundtrack becuase I thought that it had anticipation and a buildup which would be good for a fighting scene. The genre I want my teaser to be is action but mainly focused on fighting.

The first clip shown is from Blood the Last Vampire teaser which I found of youtube. I thought that the writting and music played in the teaser is similar to something which I want to do. The fighting in the Death by Degrees advert is simila to the action I will show when I do my teaser. The story behind this is linked to the game Tekken as the game is centred on one of the characters.

My animoto consists of movie adaptations of fighting games reflecting the genre and storyline my teaser will have. I am considering using the storylines in one of theses games but vhangign it slightly so that it becomes more original. I have two images of a karate Gi reflecting the syle that will be used in my teaser.

Final Double Page Spread

This is my final double page spread, from the mock ups it is clear that I have changed some of the layout but done this to match the double page spread which I looked at for my research. This includes have two images instead of one. Once again I have used the base colours for my magazine, I believe I have used each colour enough so that it doesn’t appear that there were two main colours instead of three. This is because in my content page I never included any of the colour blue so I used mainly used blue and black for my double page spread to even out the colour usage. I think that the layout is eye catching because of the two images used and it is uncluttered. When I was first doing my double page spread I was following the mock up with the red boarder but felt that something was missing which is why I decided to add another image. I saw that in my research the magazine had an image on both the right and left side of the page and thought that this was appealing and gave would give my double page spread the look which I wanted. As many of the double page spreads appeared to be in a column I thought hat I should follow this structure as there was no reason to go against this convention when it’s an interview. The pull quote is written in a different colour to make it stand out; this is also the reason why it is slightly slanted. To limit the amount of colours on the page I decided to make it red because it was not a main colour on the page and makes it stand out as well as allowing me to not use a forth colour. Some things I did not include for example a drop cap because I didn’t think that it was suitable for an interview which is structured the way mine is. This is because If I included it for one I would feel as if I needed to do it for the rest and believe that this would not look good. The pull quote is “never give up” because I think it is the most powerful words which are used in the interview and anybody can try and do this so it appealing and easy to remember. The next reason why this is the pull quote is because if a person was too look over the page and see those words I think that they may want to read the rest of the article. Overall I like the way my double page spread has turned out and think that researching and having a number of mock ups was the reason why I was able to achieve this.

From the last draft there have been some changes and this is because more questions needed to be put in place because the font needed to be smaller. I changed the font used for the slug to match the one used on the front cover because I wanted to link it back to my magazine. This font is also used for my pull quote and other information at the bottom of the page. All of these are in the colour red.
Before I did not have any title or information on the artist so I added this to the top of the double page spread as it is something that is within a standard magazine. The font used that says “Tama” is called “Klinton Blade” and is used for Tama mainly. I have also added a page number and this reflects the page which it says the interviews start on in my magazine.

Final Contents

I choose the main colour for my content page to be black because it was the colour of my front cover. The red and white are used because it is consistent throughout my magazine. When I first did my magazine contents page I had it very simplistic and never had much text which made it look unprofessional compared to when I added in the editorial pillars and different colours. The two images on the contents page have a number on them; this number is the same to the number that is on the page of where the images belong. Eg 14, this will match with fashion because it is a image of clothing and that page is about outfits worn by other artists. I have included the main things which appear to be in a music magazine which are “Gig” and “new releases” as this was previewed in the magazines I looked at for inspiration and to gain an understanding of the way music magazines look. I like my contents page because I believe it matches the image of my magazine, thought everything is simple I think that it is effective and clear which will make someone want to read it because there is no confusion about what or where things are. Some of the things that were mentioned on the front cover are mentioned in the Contents page meanwhile other things aren’t. I think I mentioned some of the main ones on my front cover to attract an audience. This is also the reason why I have included editorial pillars to give the reader a little idea about what will be included, ultimately what I am trying to do is attract them so they will want to read more and find out. The fonts that are used are the same ones which appear on the front cover and this is just to improve consistency throughout the magazine. The reason why I decided to change the font from the first contents page was because I didn't think that it was clear enough which made it inappropriate but by changing it I think it looks more ordered and better. I am pleased with the way which it ended up at and if I was to change anything I might change the background colour to white or blue instead of black and maybe include another image by re arranging the text.

Front Cover Final

This is the final version of my magazine cover. It hasn't changed much since the last draft but I have placed the model image behind the text becuase it was hard to read the name of the magazine when the image was placed infront and this was due to the font used "metal lord". To bring more attention to the guitar I have written a known band the guitar whcih can be won. This was made blue to make the blue more consistant on the page and it seperates it from the rest of the magazine.
The barcode was made smaller becuase when it was printed it was too big which did not make it look very good.
The font used for "Tama" is not used anywhere else on the page until becuase it is unique to the artist.

Evaluation Front cover, Table of contents, Double page spread

In what ways does you media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Front cover

My music magazine uses many of the conventions for a standard magazine. I have a masthead because people should know the name of the magazine they are purchasing. I thought of the name “Musang” through other magazines such as “Kerrang”, this is where the “ang” part comes from and the “Mus” comes from music. When I put these together I thought that it sounded good and kept it for the name of my magazine. This was the only name that I did come up with. I think that it has a sound at the end which will allow the customers to remember the name of magazine and what it stands for. The font used for my masthead is called “Metal lord” the font itself reminds me of music and I believe fits into the genre of music that my magazine is about, this will help attract a audience that listens to the type of music presented in the magazine. This magazine will appeal to people from the ages of 16-24, the model on the front cover is around this age and the language used is quiet conversation/colloquial that is used on the double page spread. The main point on the double page spread will also appeal to someone around this age looking or fighting to fulfil their dreams and aspirations which the pull quote “Never Give Up” represents whether it is to do with music or not anyone can use it.

The strapline is located above the masthead, it has some of the things which will be inside the magazine such as “Gigs” and this is there to entice the reader to purchase the magazine to get information on the things which will appeal to them. The reader would most likely be someone who enjoys socialising, going out having fun and getting the latest things which appeal to them therefore falling into the category of a “Post Modernist”. The people who fall into this category likes to have, to pay and be something which this magazines gives them the opportunity to do all three as shown in the contents page and front cover.
There are two coverline with editorial pillars which are also used to attract the audience in wanting to purchase the magazine as it gives them a slight indication of what to expect. The main coverline is in a different colour to the other coverline to make it stand out more, this is also the reason why it is bigger and the word “Tama” is bigger than the rest of the coverline to make him stand.

The other conventions I have used include a barcode, price and issue number. It would not have been appropriate to break any of the conventions as I didn’t have an image that needed to do this for example have no coverlines. Thought this was shown on other magazines this was not seen on any music magazines which I looked at.
Double Page Spread
I have used some of the standard conventions for a double page spread such as a “Pull Quote” and “Slug”, the slug was used to show what the page was about as there was not a big title present on the page. The “Slug” says “Interview” and it is written in capital letters and the colour red. Both of these things were done to attract the eye of the reader.

“Pull Quotes” are generally used to entice the reader to read the entire double page spread because the short phrase makes them want to read the interview/article. In my case the “Pull Quote” is something that is easily remembered by the reader and is didactic in a sense as well as encouraging them to read what is written on the double page spread.

As seen in some magazines there were two images on a page and I liked the idea of this so I decided to do this, one image is on the left and although it is bigger it helps the eye flow go down the page and continue reader before it goes across and another image smaller than the first is shown. I liked the way the text went round the images and the way that it looked on the page.

How does you media product represent any particular social groups?
My magazine does not target a specific social class in reality because the music which a person purchases and listens to may not represent the class they are in accurately. From this price it can be said that the magazine is for people within the working class because £1.50 is cheap and the upper and middleclass will be able to afford to buy a magazine at a higher price such as £3.00 even if it is weekly.

What type of institution might distribute your media product and why?
Media institutions such as IPC Media may publish my magazine because they do a variety of magazine genre and the current NME which is a music magazine is different to the one I have created so there would not be a tension between the two as the target audience is different and both magazines are promoting something different. “Musang” will sell in shops such as WH Smiths as it is a place that is located in many areas and attract customers for a variety of reason, they also have a magazine collection which “Musang” can be part of because it is ideal for people to read when they are going on holidays or are just looking for something interesting to read. Not many other magazines fit and appeal to the target audience of “Musang” so the shop would benefit from selling it. Other places such as supermarkets or News Agents would be idealistic for the increasing circulation of the magazine because they are places which a number of people visit daily.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for “Musang” would be someone around the age of 16-24, that listens to rock music primarily but other genres such as alternative as well. It will not only feature artist that play in the UK but other places as well this means that the reader will be someone who is willing to listen to other things which are similar and are not closed minded. The gender for the magazine is not specific as it can be read by either male or female readers although one of the articles is about fashion worn by Within Tempation and a image of a dress is on the content page may make it appear more for females but only the lead singer within that group is female and the others are males so the males that read the magazine will see fashion for themselves aware. Even though this is not made clear everything else within the magazine and images can appeal to a male or female audience.

How did you address/attract an audience?
The image of a male around the age of 17 is shown on the front cover holding a guitar, this shows that the artist is around the same as the target audience as what he does appeals to them. The font used suggests the image of the magazine and along with the guitar confirms this genre. As well as a unusual name for the artist there is also the fact that it is his “first live performance” by putting first people would want to know more about him so I’m addressing the fact that even if you do not know anything you can still learn a lot because he’s fairly new to the scene. From the questionnaires which were carried out the three colours which gained the most votes were red, blue and white and these have consistently been used throughout the magazine. These colours standout on black and go well together on a page. When used well they standout on a page which is a good way to attract the eye of the reader. The colours also appeal to both male and female so it’s not excluding any gender out or appears to be singling out a specific gender. This would have been different if the colours pink, purple and yellow were used because they seem to appeal to more females especially if referring to stereotypes.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Front cover

The "magnetic lasso" was what I used the most as it was used for the front cover, double page spread and Contents page. As the background for the photos which I took were not needed for to be placed on any of these pages. By using this tool it allowed me to remove part of the image and then paste it onto a new template so the construction can begin.
Contents page
When using Adobe Photoshop it was extremely useful to have the “magnetic lasso” tool as it allows things to be cut out then they can be copied and pasted onto another page and the construction of the magazine can occur. I have learnt that it takes many edits to create a magazine which the creator is pleased with and that has the right quality to make it look legitimate instead of creating something that goes against all the conventions and does not catch the eyes of the target audience. I painted and changed the layer of the dress to change it's colour becuase the black dress did not stand out on a black background. I prefer it this way and think that helps make the page look more intersting. This means that I coloured the dress in blue and changed the layer to "Overlay" as it made it look realistic.
The last tool I used on Adobe Photoshop was the "Clone Stamp" unlike the purpose of the "Magnetic Lasso" tool I wanted the background of the image; by cloning certain things out it allowed me to keep the entire image without having anything that looks out of place.

Double Page Spread

This is the second draft of my double page spread. I really like the way it looks bu when printed there were some problems such as the text size. The colours used go well together and once again are consistant throughout my magazine.

Final double page spread mock up

This is the final mock up for my double page spread with the reasons behind why things are positioned the way they are and why the colours are used.

Friday 20 March 2009

Contents Page

These are the two drafts of my contents page, as shown there has been a transition from the first draft and second draft. The colours used are the same becuase they are the main colours used thoughout my magazine. I have changed the way which the contents page looked from the first draft becuase a standard ,agazine would have more pages then what is currently shown and as you can see I created more pages in my other draft.
The fonts are different becuase the contents page should be clear for the reader to see what each page contains but this font did not allow this to happen. In the second draft I corrected this and believe that it looks better. I have also added editorial pillars so the reader gets a glimps of what to expect

magazine cover

I have three different magazine front covers, this is showing the devlopment I went through in order to get the final magazine cover which is number 3. I used the same image in all three versions of the magazine, kept the barcode in the same place and used the same colours. The positioning of the main image has remained the same. The reasons why I needed to remove the othere image from the first magazine cover I produced was the audience would not know where to foucs there attention. Even though I like the layout it did not look relaistic as a music magazine which is why I needed to change it.

The reason why I changed the font of the masthead for the magazine front cover is because I believe that it spread across the 1/3 of the rule of thrid of the top very well and this was something that I saw many other magazines do. To make the image more important I made it even bigger to cover some of the masthead, this is also something I have seen many other magazines do and think that is effective in catching the eyes of someone. The fonts for the coverline and main coverline have also changed although I always started off with three different ones they all appeared to very eye catching and creative in there own ways which is not something that standard magazines did, so I thought it would be better if I had the coverline is a different font which was simple and the main coverline in a different font.

There has not been much change from the second to third front cover but there is a massive change from the first. The first front cover went against many of the conventions of a standard magazine which gave it a creative affect but not one that magazine would take.

In the first Front cover I designed he originally had black pants but I thought that it should be red becuase red was one of the colours which the audeince wanted to be used and there was nothing on the front cover that had this colour. I also prefered the red pants to the original black but did not use the red pants for the other versions of my front cover becuase I thought that pants drawed to much attention to where they are positioned and not enough to the cover line as these were in the same colour.

Doble page spread Mock Ups

I decided that I would have a mock up of three different double page spreads so that I would have more of an option when I needed to add the body text of the interview. ~The main aim of this was to look at positioning so although there are not many boxes I have written where I would place things. At this point I had not really thought about the colour which everything would be but knew I was going to use the body colours of my front covers, this is because the three colours which are red, blue and white are constant throughout the magazine. I tried to use a similar structure to the double page spreads which I have looked at.

Some Double page Spreads that I looked at:
From the reseach it Appears that columns and boxes are used to separate text, there is an image of the artist which the article is referring two. It appears that there has to be at least one image of the artist on the page however there can be more. There is also a clear C or Z line which is something I will have to consider when creating my double page spread. The question text and answers are written in different colour which makes it easier to distinguish which is the question and where the answers begin. The colours which are used on the page appear to be consistent on the page this means that a colour is used more than once and does not appear to be there randomly. Showing that thought has gone into the colours and layout of the double page spread. This is something which I should remember if I want it to look professional.
From looking at these double page spreads I will include an image as shown on my mock up in a box and will use one colour for the question and another colour for the answer.

Magazine Front Cover and Commentary

Commentary for my magazine Front cover
Commentary for my magazine Front cover
When I conducted my questionnaire I asked them to pick three colours as I was going to use three body colours for the front cover of my magazine however in production I used two which was Red and White for the cove line, sell line and masthead; I did have a third colour which was black because it was the colour of his clothes. As a result of this I thought it would have been better if I didn’t include the blue as it would appear to be an anomaly colour. These two colours were also the most popular scoring 20% which was the same. I put the initial cost of the magazine as £1.50 because in my questionnaire I asked them the price they were willing to purchase a magazine for and whether they read magazines on a daily basis. From these answer I thought that I could make my music magazine a weekly one at the price of £1.50 as people would be willing to buy it on a weekly basis. I interpreted this from the answer that they read magazines on a daily basis.
Two main images are on the front cover of the same person to indicate that the magazine is mainly about them also according to the results I collected half of the respondent’s said that images attract them to a magazine therefore by placing two on the front cover I am trying to attract a audience that is caught by images rather than colour which is shown by the limited amount of colours I have used. The use of a guitar was something that I though of before when I did my mood board as I had a rough idea of the genre the magazine was going to be before I conducted the questionnaire. The image in the middle uses a low angle shot this was used to emphases his passion of music which is also shown in his facial expressions. The colour red has many meanings and one of the connotations is passion. If someone was looking at the image and looking for the denotation I hope they would come to the conclusion of a young male, enthusiastic in music, the use of black shoes his power and the red his passion. The camera angle used for the foreground was also low angle this is because it shows his passion for music once again. I wanted to make this point very clear which is why I have used it twice.

From the images shown on my plan it is clear to see that I have uses Adobe Photoshop to change the colour of his pants from Black to Red. I did this because I originally had no red due and as I needed to use this colour I thought it would be a good idea to make something red so that everything on the page goes together. To do this I used Airbrushing and changed the layer to Soft light to give the effect I was looking for. I have also changed the image used for the foreground from landscape to portrait. To do this I used the magic lasso tool on Adobe Photoshop.

I choose this location because it reminds me of a recording studio or some type of studio that someone would practice their music once more leading to the idea of his passion for music. I wanted to look at passion because hopefully the target audience will see some personal identity in their love for music and his. It can also be used as escapism to get away from the real world and gain inspiration to be there if it is their dream.

The target audience will be someone from the ages of 15-18 which is similar age to the target audience of the magazines I looked at for the double page spread. I have not really done anything which goes against the conventions of the magazine except on the barcode as it appears to be transparent and doe not have any numbers. I have done this because the magazine is not going to be sold in a shop so it will be purchased without scanning. The barcode was placed on the magazine so it looks more professional. It is inclusive to a school but not for any particular genre of music as each issue will have a different theme on a different genre of music.

Plan for my magazine

Name and Font for Masthead

I devised a questionnaire to see which names and fonts people preferred, this woiuld then give me an indication on what people prefer and are more likely to buy and look at.

Here is a copy of my questionnaires: Which fonts do you Prefer

Photoshoot Plan and images that will be used on my magazine front cover.

This is a plan of the Photoshoot I will conduct, here I ahve given a rough idea of the shots and images I want to take to put on my front cover or double page spread.
These are the two images I have decided I will use on the front cover of my magazine.

Double page analysis 2

Double page spread analysis 2
How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be? From the image of the people shown on the double page spread the target audience should be people around the ages of 18-24 who are interested in new upcoming bands. I choose this age range because ¾ of the page is taken up by editorial content suggesting the target audience wants to know about the band and not merely look at images which a younger target audience would do. They will not be into listening to mainstream as the genre of the band is Experimental, Noise pop, Freak folk, Indie rock and Neo-psychedelia. The target audience may be interested in geography because they mention “National geographic” and their music involves nature. They attract individuals which are not afraid to be different.

How is colour used?
The main colour scheme for the body text is blue, black and white. The background is white and has the blue and black writing on top of it. They used the colour blue to connect the words with each other meanwhile the black was the main colour used for the body text. As a result of the structure of the layout and colour choice it is very simplistic because there are no bright colours standing out on the page. This could also help with the age of the target audience. Black for text is consistent throughout NME magazine unless the background is black then than they use the colour white for text. For the drop cap they have made it bold which helps make it stand pout more than the other text, they have also used bold for the name of the band “Animal collective” and a blue caption underneath the pull quote.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The double page spread challenges the convention of a magazine because the body text is on the right page and image is on the left. It uses a Sans Serif font and a Serif font. Normally the image and text would be the other way around because when a person looks at a magazine they notice the left page first because of the way book/magazines are read in the western world. ¾ of the page is taken up by text and the remaining ¼ is taken up by the image of the band. This reflects the audience because they can be stereotyped as being more intellectual as they value information rather than images and this is reflected in the body text and music which the band play. Despite challenging the convention on normal magazines it does have a C line shown on the magazine's double page spead
C lines and Z lines are used for the reader to follow and notice certain parts of the magazine to make sure they have covered the entire page. If this was not done than they would look at the page and may not see everything.
The shot used for the image of the boys is a long shot but at a low angle as it shows them from below the waist and the part of the location they are in. We can also see water above their heads which can be captured only by the use of a low angle shot. It looks like they are in a submarine because the fish in the water which could be sharks or dolphins because of their colour and way they are shaped supporting the nature side of the audience and theme of the band’s music.

What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine?
The language is used is colloquial a example of this is the pull quote which says “People never knew how to react. They’d throw shit and ask, is this avant garde” from this example it demonstrates they are not afraid to use inappropriate language and offend the reader, showing that there is a strong relationship between the reader and magazine. This also reflects the target audience because an older target audience may not want to read anything which is inappropriate. The band were also asked questions which could be considered a social taboo in society as it was asking “ if you each had to have sex with an animal, what animal would that be” supports the previous statement that the reader and magazine have a strong relationship because of the inappropriate use of language and questions which are asked. “We’re pretty insular group of people” supports what was said about the target audience being individuals which are not afraid to be different as this band promotes being different and can give the reader confidence to continue being diverse. When reading this you do not need to know anything about the band because the questions asked will tell the reader the type of people they are and what to expect when listening to their music.

Double page spread analysis 1

How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be?“
Make 2009 rock” features Tom Delonge who is the guitarist for Blink 182 this suggests that the target audience is person who listens to American rock bands. They will be around the ages of 14 to 25 because the body text is encouraging the audience on how to achieve there goals. It is inspirational to young readers who are finding out how they want to live their lives and the career which they want to choose. This helps keep a loyalty between the reader and magazine producers.
What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine
The written text in the magazine uses a lot of language which makes the reader interact with what is being said by thinking about their own life as the life of Tom Delonge and his success in perusing his dreams is the body text for this double page spread. An example of this is “Ask yourself what it is that makes you happy” When reading this the reader may start to think about there own lives which creates personal identity between the reader and the article. The main word which comes up in many of the small articles is “you” which is the reason for the reader engage with the editorial content and reflecting on their own lives. I wouldn’t say that the language used is specific in identifying the genre of the magazine because I think this double spread article could appeal to anyone; the only reason why it is used in this magazine is because of the person who said it. This is the reason for it appealing to the target audience. The language is not formal as it contains some informla language such as "moron" and is talking to the audience as if it was an conversation which is shown in the language he used when he said "I'm also a Sagittarius, so I am adventurous by nature but even if you arn't you have to".

How is colour used?
It uses 3 colours for the entire double spread; these colours are red, black and sandy white. Black is used because it is a signature colour for Kerrang magazine; this colour also appeals to the target audience for this magazine. The red is used to highlight what the article is about. This is done by using it for the title of each section, the name of the person interviewed (Tom Delonge), title of the page. The red attract the reader to each section and the pull quote although it is written in black a red circular scribble goes around it which attracts the eyes of the reader as they look down at the page. The black is used for the body text. All the colours on the page go well with each other which means it’s easy to read when they are used together for example the page colour with the red and black writing.
Are there any ‘buzz’ words? What effect does it have on the reader?
The word “Guarantee” is a buzz it entices the audience to read what is on the page; as they promise it will come true if they take the advice and do what it says on the page. The fact that it uses rhetorical questions may be the reason why they used the word guarantee because it increases the chance of it happening then if it was just written said by Tom Delonge on what he wants to do. This is because a person reaching their individual goal encourages them to continue with trying to achieve it rather than copying someone else’s dream because the passion to succeed would not be the same; making it more likely for it not to happen.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The pages are taken up, the right side has an image of the interviewee and the left side has the question and answers to the questions that the interviewee has answered. It is neatly organised with the written text on lined paper which is as big as the whole text for that question is. The credit is in small writing at the top of the left page, the slug is positioned at the top of the right page where the picture of the interviewee is; it has a pull quote near the bottom of the left page with a red circular scribble around it which will stick in the readers head when they turn the page because as they turn that quote is what they can see. Everything other then what Tom Delonge has said is in capital letters including the pull quite. This could suggest that these are the important pieces of text on this specific page of the magazine. The picture of Tom Delonge takes up one page on his own is because the audience value his opinion and want to read about him as he has persuade a dream which they may want to. His success is a motivation for them as they want to achieve that fame in the rock music business. It displays a scrap book look as they use four different fonts on the whole page; this includes a decretive font, sans serif, serif and grunge. The scrap book theme is supported by the use of a scribble circle and black paint blobs. The writing is also used on line paper which appears to be stuck onto the page. This technique relates is used in the magazine because it is showing that it is a causal magazine that is not appealing to a high class audience.
The double page spread uses a C line shown here.

How does the style of the article match the style of the front cover?
Similar colours are used on the front cover and this article featuring Tom Delonge, the colours are red and black. The title for this article uses a grunge font for 2009; this is similar to the font Kerrang magazine uses for the masthead, the boy text is in boxes for the article and the images on the front cover are in boxes and on both the colour red is used for a shape to bring attention to an important piece of information. On the front cover it is a star where “50” is written and on the article it says “Evaluate what went right and what went wrong”. Both of these are important for the reader to remember as the one on the front cover draws them into buying the magazine because they want to read it and the one of the article is reminding the main issue which was being discussed.

Magazine analysis 2- Q magazine

~Magazine Analysis~

What type of magazine is it?
Q magazine is a pop magazine; this is shown on the front cover as they have artists which are known to sing pop music such as Kate Bush or Madonna. It is an intrinsic magazine because it excludes people who do not listen to pop music and teenagers. As the front cover suggests it is for an older reader due to the composition and model on the front cover. The price of the magazine supports this as well.

From the front cover what kinds of issues/articles are going to be inside?
The magazine says that it has “exclusive interviews” which tell the buyer right away what will be inside. Apart from this there isn’t anything else on the magazine that will tell the reader what will be inside the magazine. Judging from the long list of music artist it suggests that many articles on them will be included. On the front cover there is a buzzword which says "Exclusive interviews" the use of a buzz word is there to intice the audience into buying the magazine.

Who is the target audience for the magazine? What particular age group? What are their interests? How do you know all of this?
The target audience is someone who is mid 30 upwards; as the price is £3.90 it suggests that the reader is from a B1 on the socio economic diagram. They are looking for diversion and fantasy as interviews gives the reader a chance to look at someone else’s life and forget there own. They will be someone who listens to pop music as the list of artists named on the front cover belongs to that genre. It also has a simple design that will appeal to an older audience because as this gives the magazine a sophisticated look.

What mode of address does the magazine using? What does this tell you about the relationship it wants with the reader?
The long list of artists shows that the magazine know what the target audience want to read about, the relationship appears to be a good one as they sell the magazine at a fairly high price and people are still willing to purchase it.

What colours are used to do find the attractive?
The colours white, red and black are the main colours used on the magazine; I think that this is a good combination because when they are used together they make the magazine stand out. These colours also help highlight certain parts. For example on the front cover of this magazine the red brings your attention to the name of the magazine which is written in white and the fact that this is a special copy. The white is mainly used to advertise what will be included in the magazine in editorial terms and name of the artists.

Magazine Analysis Kerrang

~Magazine Analysis~

What type of magazine is it?
Kerrang magazine features different types of music such as rock, alternative, indie and metal because it is a magazine for people who do not listen to mainstream music such as R&B. This makes it an intrinsic magazine because it is aimed at a particular audience and excludes people who do not listen to that specific genre of music. These are bands that are not extremely famous in the world but are in the eyes of the people who read the magazine.

From the front cover what kinds of issues/articles are going to be inside?
The magazine issue (1242) has many images on the front cover suggesting that all the artists shown on the front cover will have editorial context on them inside the magazine. The reason why I choose to say they will have editorial context on them instead of including images is because at the bottom of the page there is a box which has the name “Poster Special” showing that there are posters of those artists only. The names of the bands which will be featured are named on the front cover; under the masthead which says “50 albums you need to hear in 2009” this is telling the audience one of the topics which will be included. Due to the audience listening to this type of music it will draw them in and make the buy the magazine in order to find out what the 50 albums are. The names underneath also helps persuade the buyer to purchase the magazine.

What mode of address does the magazine using? What does this tell you about the relationship it wants with the reader?
The use of all the images of the bands and names of some bands on the magazine shows the core buyer the artists it will be featuring, by doing this it shows that they are confident in knowing the exact bands/type of music the target audience listen to and what to know about. This suggests there is a strong relationship between the buyer and creator as they know what the buyer wants and gives it to them. This is also supported by the fact the magazine does not have many sell line(s) to tell the audience the exact type of articles they will be reading. By not doing this it shows there is a trusting and strong relationship between the two.

Who is the target audience for the magazine? What particular age group? What are their interests? How do you know all of this?
The magazine is for both male and female from ages of 14-25 despite some of the concerts advertised are for people around the age of 18 because alcohol is served. The buyer would be someone into alternative type of music, who wants to know information on gigs, live shows and reviews. The rock/alternative genres of music featured in Kerrang involve many different forms of music and instruments for example there are singers and growls; the instruments range from cellos which is used in classical music to electric guitars. They are also looking for inspiration. We can tell this because of the editorial context inside the magazine, if the buyer was not interested in this information it would not take up around 3 double pages of the magazine, they also display one or two images of people who went to that particular gig and a comment underneath. In those images the clothes they wear are similar the ones the artists wear showing that fashion is also a symbolic feature of the magazine.

What does the design of the masthead tell you about the magazine?
The masthead is distorted representing the “craziness” of the music, it is bold which makes it eye catching; the fact that it is distorted also contributes in making the masthead stand out. It creates a unique look. When the font is seen it automatically reminds the reader of Kerrang which means that it is easily recognisable and people know what it is. This can be seen as a promoting technique as the font and magazine go together and create a recognised image.

What colours are used to do find the attractive?
The colours used are white, red and black; I think this is a good combination because they are all bold colours especially when put together, they are also very powerful and eye catching. The colours do not distract you when looking at the magazine because they go well together. The white and black are two opposite colours which go well together and can be seen clearly. I like the colour combination and would use it for my own magazine if I was to decide on the colours. Based on the questionnaire I carried out white and red were two of the most popular colours and they are featured on the magazine which suggests that the buyers of the magazine like the colour combination.
