Double page spread analysis 1

How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be?“
Make 2009 rock” features Tom Delonge who is the guitarist for Blink 182 this suggests that the target audience is person who listens to American rock bands. They will be around the ages of 14 to 25 because the body text is encouraging the audience on how to achieve there goals. It is inspirational to young readers who are finding out how they want to live their lives and the career which they want to choose. This helps keep a loyalty between the reader and magazine producers.
What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine
The written text in the magazine uses a lot of language which makes the reader interact with what is being said by thinking about their own life as the life of Tom Delonge and his success in perusing his dreams is the body text for this double page spread. An example of this is “Ask yourself what it is that makes you happy” When reading this the reader may start to think about there own lives which creates personal identity between the reader and the article. The main word which comes up in many of the small articles is “you” which is the reason for the reader engage with the editorial content and reflecting on their own lives. I wouldn’t say that the language used is specific in identifying the genre of the magazine because I think this double spread article could appeal to anyone; the only reason why it is used in this magazine is because of the person who said it. This is the reason for it appealing to the target audience. The language is not formal as it contains some informla language such as "moron" and is talking to the audience as if it was an conversation which is shown in the language he used when he said "I'm also a Sagittarius, so I am adventurous by nature but even if you arn't you have to".

How is colour used?
It uses 3 colours for the entire double spread; these colours are red, black and sandy white. Black is used because it is a signature colour for Kerrang magazine; this colour also appeals to the target audience for this magazine. The red is used to highlight what the article is about. This is done by using it for the title of each section, the name of the person interviewed (Tom Delonge), title of the page. The red attract the reader to each section and the pull quote although it is written in black a red circular scribble goes around it which attracts the eyes of the reader as they look down at the page. The black is used for the body text. All the colours on the page go well with each other which means it’s easy to read when they are used together for example the page colour with the red and black writing.
Are there any ‘buzz’ words? What effect does it have on the reader?
The word “Guarantee” is a buzz it entices the audience to read what is on the page; as they promise it will come true if they take the advice and do what it says on the page. The fact that it uses rhetorical questions may be the reason why they used the word guarantee because it increases the chance of it happening then if it was just written said by Tom Delonge on what he wants to do. This is because a person reaching their individual goal encourages them to continue with trying to achieve it rather than copying someone else’s dream because the passion to succeed would not be the same; making it more likely for it not to happen.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The pages are taken up, the right side has an image of the interviewee and the left side has the question and answers to the questions that the interviewee has answered. It is neatly organised with the written text on lined paper which is as big as the whole text for that question is. The credit is in small writing at the top of the left page, the slug is positioned at the top of the right page where the picture of the interviewee is; it has a pull quote near the bottom of the left page with a red circular scribble around it which will stick in the readers head when they turn the page because as they turn that quote is what they can see. Everything other then what Tom Delonge has said is in capital letters including the pull quite. This could suggest that these are the important pieces of text on this specific page of the magazine. The picture of Tom Delonge takes up one page on his own is because the audience value his opinion and want to read about him as he has persuade a dream which they may want to. His success is a motivation for them as they want to achieve that fame in the rock music business. It displays a scrap book look as they use four different fonts on the whole page; this includes a decretive font, sans serif, serif and grunge. The scrap book theme is supported by the use of a scribble circle and black paint blobs. The writing is also used on line paper which appears to be stuck onto the page. This technique relates is used in the magazine because it is showing that it is a causal magazine that is not appealing to a high class audience.
The double page spread uses a C line shown here.

How does the style of the article match the style of the front cover?
Similar colours are used on the front cover and this article featuring Tom Delonge, the colours are red and black. The title for this article uses a grunge font for 2009; this is similar to the font Kerrang magazine uses for the masthead, the boy text is in boxes for the article and the images on the front cover are in boxes and on both the colour red is used for a shape to bring attention to an important piece of information. On the front cover it is a star where “50” is written and on the article it says “Evaluate what went right and what went wrong”. Both of these are important for the reader to remember as the one on the front cover draws them into buying the magazine because they want to read it and the one of the article is reminding the main issue which was being discussed.
