Double page analysis 2

Double page spread analysis 2
How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be? From the image of the people shown on the double page spread the target audience should be people around the ages of 18-24 who are interested in new upcoming bands. I choose this age range because ¾ of the page is taken up by editorial content suggesting the target audience wants to know about the band and not merely look at images which a younger target audience would do. They will not be into listening to mainstream as the genre of the band is Experimental, Noise pop, Freak folk, Indie rock and Neo-psychedelia. The target audience may be interested in geography because they mention “National geographic” and their music involves nature. They attract individuals which are not afraid to be different.

How is colour used?
The main colour scheme for the body text is blue, black and white. The background is white and has the blue and black writing on top of it. They used the colour blue to connect the words with each other meanwhile the black was the main colour used for the body text. As a result of the structure of the layout and colour choice it is very simplistic because there are no bright colours standing out on the page. This could also help with the age of the target audience. Black for text is consistent throughout NME magazine unless the background is black then than they use the colour white for text. For the drop cap they have made it bold which helps make it stand pout more than the other text, they have also used bold for the name of the band “Animal collective” and a blue caption underneath the pull quote.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The double page spread challenges the convention of a magazine because the body text is on the right page and image is on the left. It uses a Sans Serif font and a Serif font. Normally the image and text would be the other way around because when a person looks at a magazine they notice the left page first because of the way book/magazines are read in the western world. ¾ of the page is taken up by text and the remaining ¼ is taken up by the image of the band. This reflects the audience because they can be stereotyped as being more intellectual as they value information rather than images and this is reflected in the body text and music which the band play. Despite challenging the convention on normal magazines it does have a C line shown on the magazine's double page spead
C lines and Z lines are used for the reader to follow and notice certain parts of the magazine to make sure they have covered the entire page. If this was not done than they would look at the page and may not see everything.
The shot used for the image of the boys is a long shot but at a low angle as it shows them from below the waist and the part of the location they are in. We can also see water above their heads which can be captured only by the use of a low angle shot. It looks like they are in a submarine because the fish in the water which could be sharks or dolphins because of their colour and way they are shaped supporting the nature side of the audience and theme of the band’s music.

What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine?
The language is used is colloquial a example of this is the pull quote which says “People never knew how to react. They’d throw shit and ask, is this avant garde” from this example it demonstrates they are not afraid to use inappropriate language and offend the reader, showing that there is a strong relationship between the reader and magazine. This also reflects the target audience because an older target audience may not want to read anything which is inappropriate. The band were also asked questions which could be considered a social taboo in society as it was asking “ if you each had to have sex with an animal, what animal would that be” supports the previous statement that the reader and magazine have a strong relationship because of the inappropriate use of language and questions which are asked. “We’re pretty insular group of people” supports what was said about the target audience being individuals which are not afraid to be different as this band promotes being different and can give the reader confidence to continue being diverse. When reading this you do not need to know anything about the band because the questions asked will tell the reader the type of people they are and what to expect when listening to their music.

Double page spread analysis 1

How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be?“
Make 2009 rock” features Tom Delonge who is the guitarist for Blink 182 this suggests that the target audience is person who listens to American rock bands. They will be around the ages of 14 to 25 because the body text is encouraging the audience on how to achieve there goals. It is inspirational to young readers who are finding out how they want to live their lives and the career which they want to choose. This helps keep a loyalty between the reader and magazine producers.
What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine
The written text in the magazine uses a lot of language which makes the reader interact with what is being said by thinking about their own life as the life of Tom Delonge and his success in perusing his dreams is the body text for this double page spread. An example of this is “Ask yourself what it is that makes you happy” When reading this the reader may start to think about there own lives which creates personal identity between the reader and the article. The main word which comes up in many of the small articles is “you” which is the reason for the reader engage with the editorial content and reflecting on their own lives. I wouldn’t say that the language used is specific in identifying the genre of the magazine because I think this double spread article could appeal to anyone; the only reason why it is used in this magazine is because of the person who said it. This is the reason for it appealing to the target audience. The language is not formal as it contains some informla language such as "moron" and is talking to the audience as if it was an conversation which is shown in the language he used when he said "I'm also a Sagittarius, so I am adventurous by nature but even if you arn't you have to".

How is colour used?
It uses 3 colours for the entire double spread; these colours are red, black and sandy white. Black is used because it is a signature colour for Kerrang magazine; this colour also appeals to the target audience for this magazine. The red is used to highlight what the article is about. This is done by using it for the title of each section, the name of the person interviewed (Tom Delonge), title of the page. The red attract the reader to each section and the pull quote although it is written in black a red circular scribble goes around it which attracts the eyes of the reader as they look down at the page. The black is used for the body text. All the colours on the page go well with each other which means it’s easy to read when they are used together for example the page colour with the red and black writing.
Are there any ‘buzz’ words? What effect does it have on the reader?
The word “Guarantee” is a buzz it entices the audience to read what is on the page; as they promise it will come true if they take the advice and do what it says on the page. The fact that it uses rhetorical questions may be the reason why they used the word guarantee because it increases the chance of it happening then if it was just written said by Tom Delonge on what he wants to do. This is because a person reaching their individual goal encourages them to continue with trying to achieve it rather than copying someone else’s dream because the passion to succeed would not be the same; making it more likely for it not to happen.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The pages are taken up, the right side has an image of the interviewee and the left side has the question and answers to the questions that the interviewee has answered. It is neatly organised with the written text on lined paper which is as big as the whole text for that question is. The credit is in small writing at the top of the left page, the slug is positioned at the top of the right page where the picture of the interviewee is; it has a pull quote near the bottom of the left page with a red circular scribble around it which will stick in the readers head when they turn the page because as they turn that quote is what they can see. Everything other then what Tom Delonge has said is in capital letters including the pull quite. This could suggest that these are the important pieces of text on this specific page of the magazine. The picture of Tom Delonge takes up one page on his own is because the audience value his opinion and want to read about him as he has persuade a dream which they may want to. His success is a motivation for them as they want to achieve that fame in the rock music business. It displays a scrap book look as they use four different fonts on the whole page; this includes a decretive font, sans serif, serif and grunge. The scrap book theme is supported by the use of a scribble circle and black paint blobs. The writing is also used on line paper which appears to be stuck onto the page. This technique relates is used in the magazine because it is showing that it is a causal magazine that is not appealing to a high class audience.
The double page spread uses a C line shown here.

How does the style of the article match the style of the front cover?
Similar colours are used on the front cover and this article featuring Tom Delonge, the colours are red and black. The title for this article uses a grunge font for 2009; this is similar to the font Kerrang magazine uses for the masthead, the boy text is in boxes for the article and the images on the front cover are in boxes and on both the colour red is used for a shape to bring attention to an important piece of information. On the front cover it is a star where “50” is written and on the article it says “Evaluate what went right and what went wrong”. Both of these are important for the reader to remember as the one on the front cover draws them into buying the magazine because they want to read it and the one of the article is reminding the main issue which was being discussed.

Magazine analysis 2- Q magazine

~Magazine Analysis~

What type of magazine is it?
Q magazine is a pop magazine; this is shown on the front cover as they have artists which are known to sing pop music such as Kate Bush or Madonna. It is an intrinsic magazine because it excludes people who do not listen to pop music and teenagers. As the front cover suggests it is for an older reader due to the composition and model on the front cover. The price of the magazine supports this as well.

From the front cover what kinds of issues/articles are going to be inside?
The magazine says that it has “exclusive interviews” which tell the buyer right away what will be inside. Apart from this there isn’t anything else on the magazine that will tell the reader what will be inside the magazine. Judging from the long list of music artist it suggests that many articles on them will be included. On the front cover there is a buzzword which says "Exclusive interviews" the use of a buzz word is there to intice the audience into buying the magazine.

Who is the target audience for the magazine? What particular age group? What are their interests? How do you know all of this?
The target audience is someone who is mid 30 upwards; as the price is £3.90 it suggests that the reader is from a B1 on the socio economic diagram. They are looking for diversion and fantasy as interviews gives the reader a chance to look at someone else’s life and forget there own. They will be someone who listens to pop music as the list of artists named on the front cover belongs to that genre. It also has a simple design that will appeal to an older audience because as this gives the magazine a sophisticated look.

What mode of address does the magazine using? What does this tell you about the relationship it wants with the reader?
The long list of artists shows that the magazine know what the target audience want to read about, the relationship appears to be a good one as they sell the magazine at a fairly high price and people are still willing to purchase it.

What colours are used to do find the attractive?
The colours white, red and black are the main colours used on the magazine; I think that this is a good combination because when they are used together they make the magazine stand out. These colours also help highlight certain parts. For example on the front cover of this magazine the red brings your attention to the name of the magazine which is written in white and the fact that this is a special copy. The white is mainly used to advertise what will be included in the magazine in editorial terms and name of the artists.

Magazine Analysis Kerrang

~Magazine Analysis~

What type of magazine is it?
Kerrang magazine features different types of music such as rock, alternative, indie and metal because it is a magazine for people who do not listen to mainstream music such as R&B. This makes it an intrinsic magazine because it is aimed at a particular audience and excludes people who do not listen to that specific genre of music. These are bands that are not extremely famous in the world but are in the eyes of the people who read the magazine.

From the front cover what kinds of issues/articles are going to be inside?
The magazine issue (1242) has many images on the front cover suggesting that all the artists shown on the front cover will have editorial context on them inside the magazine. The reason why I choose to say they will have editorial context on them instead of including images is because at the bottom of the page there is a box which has the name “Poster Special” showing that there are posters of those artists only. The names of the bands which will be featured are named on the front cover; under the masthead which says “50 albums you need to hear in 2009” this is telling the audience one of the topics which will be included. Due to the audience listening to this type of music it will draw them in and make the buy the magazine in order to find out what the 50 albums are. The names underneath also helps persuade the buyer to purchase the magazine.

What mode of address does the magazine using? What does this tell you about the relationship it wants with the reader?
The use of all the images of the bands and names of some bands on the magazine shows the core buyer the artists it will be featuring, by doing this it shows that they are confident in knowing the exact bands/type of music the target audience listen to and what to know about. This suggests there is a strong relationship between the buyer and creator as they know what the buyer wants and gives it to them. This is also supported by the fact the magazine does not have many sell line(s) to tell the audience the exact type of articles they will be reading. By not doing this it shows there is a trusting and strong relationship between the two.

Who is the target audience for the magazine? What particular age group? What are their interests? How do you know all of this?
The magazine is for both male and female from ages of 14-25 despite some of the concerts advertised are for people around the age of 18 because alcohol is served. The buyer would be someone into alternative type of music, who wants to know information on gigs, live shows and reviews. The rock/alternative genres of music featured in Kerrang involve many different forms of music and instruments for example there are singers and growls; the instruments range from cellos which is used in classical music to electric guitars. They are also looking for inspiration. We can tell this because of the editorial context inside the magazine, if the buyer was not interested in this information it would not take up around 3 double pages of the magazine, they also display one or two images of people who went to that particular gig and a comment underneath. In those images the clothes they wear are similar the ones the artists wear showing that fashion is also a symbolic feature of the magazine.

What does the design of the masthead tell you about the magazine?
The masthead is distorted representing the “craziness” of the music, it is bold which makes it eye catching; the fact that it is distorted also contributes in making the masthead stand out. It creates a unique look. When the font is seen it automatically reminds the reader of Kerrang which means that it is easily recognisable and people know what it is. This can be seen as a promoting technique as the font and magazine go together and create a recognised image.

What colours are used to do find the attractive?
The colours used are white, red and black; I think this is a good combination because they are all bold colours especially when put together, they are also very powerful and eye catching. The colours do not distract you when looking at the magazine because they go well together. The white and black are two opposite colours which go well together and can be seen clearly. I like the colour combination and would use it for my own magazine if I was to decide on the colours. Based on the questionnaire I carried out white and red were two of the most popular colours and they are featured on the magazine which suggests that the buyers of the magazine like the colour combination.
