Double page analysis 2

Double page spread analysis 2
How does the band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be? From the image of the people shown on the double page spread the target audience should be people around the ages of 18-24 who are interested in new upcoming bands. I choose this age range because ¾ of the page is taken up by editorial content suggesting the target audience wants to know about the band and not merely look at images which a younger target audience would do. They will not be into listening to mainstream as the genre of the band is Experimental, Noise pop, Freak folk, Indie rock and Neo-psychedelia. The target audience may be interested in geography because they mention “National geographic” and their music involves nature. They attract individuals which are not afraid to be different.

How is colour used?
The main colour scheme for the body text is blue, black and white. The background is white and has the blue and black writing on top of it. They used the colour blue to connect the words with each other meanwhile the black was the main colour used for the body text. As a result of the structure of the layout and colour choice it is very simplistic because there are no bright colours standing out on the page. This could also help with the age of the target audience. Black for text is consistent throughout NME magazine unless the background is black then than they use the colour white for text. For the drop cap they have made it bold which helps make it stand pout more than the other text, they have also used bold for the name of the band “Animal collective” and a blue caption underneath the pull quote.

How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
The double page spread challenges the convention of a magazine because the body text is on the right page and image is on the left. It uses a Sans Serif font and a Serif font. Normally the image and text would be the other way around because when a person looks at a magazine they notice the left page first because of the way book/magazines are read in the western world. ¾ of the page is taken up by text and the remaining ¼ is taken up by the image of the band. This reflects the audience because they can be stereotyped as being more intellectual as they value information rather than images and this is reflected in the body text and music which the band play. Despite challenging the convention on normal magazines it does have a C line shown on the magazine's double page spead
C lines and Z lines are used for the reader to follow and notice certain parts of the magazine to make sure they have covered the entire page. If this was not done than they would look at the page and may not see everything.
The shot used for the image of the boys is a long shot but at a low angle as it shows them from below the waist and the part of the location they are in. We can also see water above their heads which can be captured only by the use of a low angle shot. It looks like they are in a submarine because the fish in the water which could be sharks or dolphins because of their colour and way they are shaped supporting the nature side of the audience and theme of the band’s music.

What type of language is used in the articles? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine?
The language is used is colloquial a example of this is the pull quote which says “People never knew how to react. They’d throw shit and ask, is this avant garde” from this example it demonstrates they are not afraid to use inappropriate language and offend the reader, showing that there is a strong relationship between the reader and magazine. This also reflects the target audience because an older target audience may not want to read anything which is inappropriate. The band were also asked questions which could be considered a social taboo in society as it was asking “ if you each had to have sex with an animal, what animal would that be” supports the previous statement that the reader and magazine have a strong relationship because of the inappropriate use of language and questions which are asked. “We’re pretty insular group of people” supports what was said about the target audience being individuals which are not afraid to be different as this band promotes being different and can give the reader confidence to continue being diverse. When reading this you do not need to know anything about the band because the questions asked will tell the reader the type of people they are and what to expect when listening to their music.
